CHW Dataset

The Coastal Hazard Wheel (CHW) initiative facilitates global coastal resilience by developing and maintaining a shared, science-based reference framework for understanding, classifying, and addressing coastal hazards and adaptation.

This page provides the official CHW 3.0 machine-readable dataset package to support a globally consistent classification of coastal environments, screening-level multi-hazard profiles and adaptation option logic for hazard screening and coastal planning, and an open foundation for practical application, interoperability, and AI-assisted decision support.

The package includes:

1. the CHW 3.0 Logic table (coastal type definition + hazard level profile), and

2. the CHW 3.0 Hazard management matrix (binary relevance of management options by hazard and coastal type),
   plus lookup tables, documentation, and machine-readable metadata.

Scope: Screening-level framework dataset (not a substitute for site-specific engineering design)
File format: UTF-8 CSV, comma delimiter, header row included (LF newlines)
Missingness rule: "any" means “dimension does not filter/constrain”; it is not missing/unknown data
Management matrix values: 1 = relevant/applicable at screening level; 0 = not generally relevant/applicable (0 is not missing data)
Hazard level scale (logic table): 1–4 is an ordinal screening scale (relative hazard level), not a probability or return period

HOW TO USE (JOINING THE DATASETS)

Join the two core datasets on the shared key chw_code:

chw_3_0_logic.csv (column chw_code)
chw_3_0_hazard_management_matrix.csv (column chw_code)

This is a one-to-one join: each CHW coastal type appears once in each dataset.
